Now Introducing Bestial Mouths: A Brief Interview

For folks like me who are new to you, let’s start with the basic, who is Bestial Mouths?

Nice to meet your acquaintance! and thank you for taking the time to discover us, want to learn more and spreading the word. Bestial Mouths is an art form, focusing on the whole overall experience. We like to captivate all the senses, ears, eyes and soul. We are not focusing on one straight forward genre, creating a newer type of modern dark sound. We create what is in us, which happens to be very intense. Life is an experience and without even realizing it you soak in everything, and that comes out in the music. Having listened to punk, post-punk, goth, death rock, industrial, harsh electronics, minimal synth, and experimental for example so these all have a presence in our sound. I am really excited as well with what’s been happening in the dark electronic scene too.

If you had to name 5 artists who best described your influences and/or your sound, who would they be?

It is certainly hard to just pick 5 – too many incredible artist out there in this world, in the past and present and definitely, I know, coming in the future.

Of course personally for me is Diamanda Galas. I am also heavily moved and intrigued with gypsy singers vocal range and the emotions in their voice, sends chills down my spine. Cindytalk is another fav of mine.

Truthfully, influences can vary depending on what I happen to be listening to at the moment but some classics for us are Einstürzende Neubauten, PSYCHIC TV, and even My Bloody Valentine for example.

You’re coming through my city in your tour. Have you been to Philly before? Any good Philly stories?

It has been quite awhile since we have been to Philly so happy to return for sure. My fav story is I still dream about this veggie Philly cheesesteak I had once there.

Where are some of your other fave places to play?

I really love playing smaller places and towns I may have not previously known. As I have lived in many of the major bigger cities in the US myself (NYC, LA, Portland and Atlanta to name a few) I know these and the culture. It is very interesting to meet the people and culture of different places. Being able to tour is a marvelous thing as you experience and connect with people and places you may have never expected you would ever have been.

In these trying times, what is your advice to folks out there trying to make it day to day?

I welcome their advice as well! (as I wish I had the answers to give some wisdom). But truth is history repeats itself sadly over and over, and there have been tough and maybe tougher times for many in the past. All I can do is continue on, day by day, and try to focus on what is good and positive and be there for others. We can all contribute and help society in anyway we can, even if it feels small and insignificant and even if you just reach a few people out there. Animal rescue and awareness is my passion. And I try to use my medium of song/voice to reach others and hopefully give them something to take away with them. I myself have been very lucky to have found true love and friend support during some very difficult times in my life, so I say never stop trying to connect with humanity. It is a hard plight but I try to never become jagged and let the oppressors win.

Any other last thoughts?

“…my body went heartless, and armed to the teeth…i am edible, tho knots of tongues…are we dead or are we doomed…..our sorrows pass in silence…because even in my dreams the screaming never stops….”

Where on the Interwebs and Social Media can we find you?

Justin has been running websites since his first Geocities site in 1994, but only did he ever start covering anything of substance years later. After he stopped regularly running local concerts in Northern NJ and the greater Philly area, he knew he needed to step up his writing game if he expected to continue to get free music to listen to. He writes regularly here and at Cinapse, as well as contributing to a few other sites on occasion. He likes music, film, the Philadelphia Eagles, the 76ers, talking about Criminal Justice, reading Intelligence Report, and his family... not in that order. His beautiful wife is far more talented than he is and his kids far more adorable... and crazy.
