Out Now on Home Video: ARIZONA is Bloody Good Time

Arizona is a dark and violent action comedy with some interesting social commentary in the background. Set in a desert town created by the housing crisis, Danny McBride’s Sonny is a man on the edge of a psychotic break. After an accident in the early goings of the story, Sonny falls over that edge and dives deeper and deeper into madness. In his transformation from despondent struggling middle class husband to crazy spree killer, McBride is what this film is all about. From scene to scene, he’s the star and it’s a perfectly over-the-top Danny McBride role.

This film isn’t necessarily going to blow you away, but it’s a pretty great way to spend an evening. It’s fun, blood soaked, and highly entertaining from start to finish. Besides the insane performance from McBride, the film also features great performances from Rosemarie DeWitt, Luke Wilson, Kaitlin Olson, David Alan Grier, Elizabeth Gillies, Lolli Sorenson, and an uncredited Seth Rogen. DeWitt is the only one who carries the type of gravitas and power on screen as McBride does in this one. While her energy is far different and more subdued, she commands her scenes just as strongly as he commands his. The interplay between the two is a large part of what makes the film work. It shouldn’t go without noting that Grier is particularly great in his role, as well.

The long and the short of it is that Arizona is an extremely fun and dark genre mashup with laughs, thrills, and some good ol’ blood and guts. Grab it now on Blu-ray, DVD, and all major VOD services.

After he stopped regularly running local concerts in Northern NJ and the greater Philly area, he knew he needed to step up his writing game if he expected to continue to get free music to listen to. He writes regularly here and at Cinapse, as well as contributing to a few other sites on occasion. He likes music, film, the Philadelphia Eagles, the 76ers, talking about Criminal Justice, reading Intelligence Report, and his family... not in that order. His beautiful wife is far more talented than he is and his kids far more adorable... and crazy.
