Celebrating Psychedelic Psaturday with VAST CALDERA I

Progressive and psychedelic rock aren’t for everyone… and, admittedly, they’re not always for me. Sure, I’ll sing along to “Today’s Tom Sawyee” ala Paul Rudd and Jason Seigel in I Love You Man on occasion. However, the number of prog bands that I truly appreciate and regularly listen to are basically limited to Mars Volta and… well… Mars Volta.

Add a second to that list, NYC’s Vast Caldera, the solo project from talented musician Justin Weiss. Obsessed with Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and making electronic music, Weiss’s sound is melodic and entrancing. On Vast Caldera I, the listener is treated to five tracks of sprawling psych, prog, funk, and electronica in a unique blend that is sure to perk up some ears. Layers of progressive metallic guitars, driving beats, and funky rhythms make the 17 minute EP a great way to start the day, fuel a writing session, or float away into a much needed contemplative break from the here and now.

Fans of Mars Volta, Black Keys, classic psychedelic rock, and the groovier side of Nine Inch Nails will find a new release for their heavy rotation. From the opening piano interlude of “Romance” through the funk-laden “Glory” and powerful closing moments of “Dawn”, this is a cover to cover listen without even a moment to skip over.

If this sounds like your bag or you just need a little reprieve from the hectic holiday weekend, check it out below, stream it on Spotify, or check out Justin’s website.

Justin has been running websites since his first Geocities site in 1994, but only did he ever start covering anything of substance years later. After he stopped regularly running local concerts in Northern NJ and the greater Philly area, he knew he needed to step up his writing game if he expected to continue to get free music to listen to. He writes regularly here and at Cinapse, as well as contributing to a few other sites on occasion. He likes music, film, the Philadelphia Eagles, the 76ers, talking about Criminal Justice, reading Intelligence Report, and his family... not in that order. His beautiful wife is far more talented than he is and his kids far more adorable... and crazy.
