Float Away with MARK VICKNESS INTERCONNECTED
Many of us are working and schooling from home these days. While some of us have used the time as an excuse to physically get away to their vacations homes or rent COVID hideaways to escape to, others of us can’t afford such luxuries. Sometimes the vacations and getaways have to be inside of us, in our minds. Enter Mark Vickness’s new project Mark Vickness Interconnected and their first release, Interconnected.
Comprised of world class musicians, including Mark himself, the album is described as instrumental acoustic fusion. Whatever the style is called, it’s fair to say that it’s exactly that type of magical trip of the mind needed in this trying time. With 9 tracks that clock in at a total of 44 minutes, it’s a perfect getaway while you sip some wine in the bathtub, relax in your favorite chair, or need some calming tunes while you type the 45th report of the week while awaiting the 73rd Zoom meeting.
The lead track off the album (video above) is “Interwoven” and features a perfect blending of cello, guitar, violin, guitar, bass, and hand drums. It opens the album on a strong note and sets the tone for the drift away vibe that is to follow. While not as bright as a few other tracks, it truly creates a contemplative vibe of serenity and thoughtful relaxation. Another standout track is “Hot Apple Stuff” which was created as an entry for NPR’s Tiny Desk competition (video below). I bit more toe tapping, the studio version of this one joins the fray on the album one two tracks after the opener (while the live version featured in this video appears towards the end of this collection). “Hot Apple Stuff” sets up a good contrast for the following track – “Bodega Blue”, another standout, but really more of the stripped down acoustic guitar driven variety.
An interesting blend of jazz, pop, and classical styles, Interconnected is a fantastic album that deserves some real consideration in this time and place. Beautiful music that ranges from simple to intricate without missing a beat, the project is a must listen experience.
