Julia Pratt Give a New Spin to a “Tried and True” Musical Formula
A female singer-songwriter winning me over isn’t always an easy feat. While I have nothing against female vocalists and I can assure you I’m not a misogynistic pig, I have always leaned towards male vocals. Coming of age in the male dominated punk scene probably plays a part, while being able to sing along to songs in my own personal range is surely one of the reasons as well. For whatever reason, the number of female vocalists that truly become favorites is limited – even moreso when they are of the singer-songwriter variety, as my tastes typically veer towards rock (notably punk and alternative) and hip-hop (notably old school and underground) more than anything. So, when I say that I really really love this new Julia Pratt single, “Tried and True”, you know it’s saying something.
Philly based singer-songwriter Julia Pratt has her own unique style that invokes equal parts Norah Jones, Billie Holiday, Imogen Heap, and Skye Edwards. Soulful, alternative, lush, and strong vocals that remain simultaneously beautiful and powerful – a balancing act that a fair few are able to master. Yet, on “Tried and True”, Pratt masters this balance with the veteran presence of a long time music scene fixture. Her sound is full, the melodies are infectious, and the vocal harmonies are incredible. For a first taste of this young artist, I must say that I am left somehow fulfilled and wanting more… another unique blend that few artists are able to conjure.
At 21 years old, I can’t help but fill with excitement of the prospects of what is yet to come from Pratt. Her sound is already seemingly so developed and full now, I can only imagine the possibilities as she continues to grow and mature musically. This is a name that everyone is sure to know in the coming years, so get on board now… you’ll be able to get in on the ground floor for an artist headed straight to the top floor.
