Die, Hipster D-Bags, Die: PSYCHOTIC! A BROOKLYN SLASHER FILM
Written and directed by Derek Gibbons and Maxwell Frey, Psychotic! is about a group of Brooklyn party animal hipsters dealing with the problems associated with their lifestyle, while being picked off by a serial killer known as Bushwick Party Killer.
Question: If a hipster is murdered while doing whatever a hipster does, is it a crime or mercy killing? Never mind, don’t answer that because it has nothing to do with the film in question. Don’t get me wrong because hard partying hipster types do meet their end in grisly ways instead of the usual teens who make up 99% of the killer’s fodder in these slasher films. The idea of it being older hipster types doing the drinking, drugs, sex and being stupid while a killer is going around offing them is a refreshing change of pace.
The Bushwick area of Brooklyn provided a very interesting backdrop for the film. The lighting and pacing will give you a feeling that you are on an acid trip without the negative side effects. The actors were believable in their roles and there isn’t a wooden performance in the bunch. The script works like a charm with it’s well balanced mix of humor and suspense and the murder pieces are realistic with their use of simple effects. The Italian horror movie fan in me kept detecting hints of the Giallo style with scenes from the killer’s POV and the killer wearing black gloves and using a razor.
Highly recommended.
