VOICE OF SHADOWS: Lofty Goals with Mixed Results
Voice of Shadows follows the story of Gabriel (Guillermo Blanco), a young man struggling with his past and his faith in god, and his girlfriend, Emma (Corinne Mica), who has recently inherited of her Aunt Milda (Jane Hammil). Gabriel has seemingly sacrificed a lot to be in America with Emma, including moving his sister, Celeste (Maria Jose` Vargas) to America as well. Things take a turn when they find out the strict stipulations of the inheritance, as well as Aunt Milda’s dark secrets.
With horror mysteries, Audiences tend to desire answers for some of the inexplicable horrors that they bear witness to. Nicholas Bain’s Voice of Shadows falls a bit short in that department – In resolution and horror. We’re given surface level exposition, but I found myself asking more questions than I got answers. Despite Jane Hammil’s strong performance, The other actors fail to shine on screen by comparison, and the two lead’s have zero chemistry.
Packed with tropes, scenes that fail to conjure fear, cheap after- effects, and a far too convenient ending, Voice of Shadows ultimately aims high, but the follow through is disjointed and disappointing. Which is a shame, because Nicholas Bain and Guillermo Blanco seem really passionate about this film.
