Diving into the Mind of a Killer with BRUTAL
A savage murderer is on the prowl in Japan. One by one, his victims fall but what is he searching for? The same thing a murderess is looking for. We are all looking for that special love of our lives and sometimes, we’re willing to kill everyone to find that special someone. This is the tale of two people finding each other in the most vicious way possible.
Films like Brutal are why I love Unearthed Films and I am not ashamed to admit it. Their films are for those who enjoy a little story with the gory splatter goodness. It is a sixty minute study of the serial killer mindset that is divided into three acts. It’s the last act that packed a gut punch that had me thinking about what I just watched hours after I finished the movie. Being that the Japanese can take the most taboo subjects and turn them into mainstream masterpieces but the subject matter of this film firmly belongs in the talks of great underground films of this post modern era.
The three acts of the film I made reference to earlier has to do with the male serial killer and his kill spree makes up Act 1, his female counterpart’s rampage comprises act 2 and the entire tone of the film shifts in the final act when they meet by chance and both decide to off the other one in a bloody slapstick kind of brawl that reaches a new level of “what the f**k did I watch.” Was it a love they both have been killing for all this time or just two psychos who love to kill. That, my dear reader, is open ended and the answers didn’t come easy for me until I replayed the final couple of minutes of the film and with that everything came full circle and I understood.
