Celebrity Warship Culture: “Bill Hader” Never Rocked So Hard
The democratic unit of Liam Scott, Mark Pickell, Todd Pickell, and Trevor Gay share production duties, get equal say in the musical direction, and all contribute in the creative process. This is a novel idea for a band, seeing as it’s rarely the case these days… in fact, it never has been all that common. However, this is the case for Vancouver based rock outfit Celebrity Warship Culture.
Their latest offering, Recreational Everything, takes the approach of melding various influences into a melting pot and creating a sound unique to their collective influences and preferred styles of music. Of course, more than anything else, it is decidedly rock and or roll at every turn. With a ferocious blending of shoegaze, noise rock, post-punk, grunge, and art-rock, Celebrity Warship Culture is set to dismantle our false narratives and frameworks with their dark commentary, face melting riffs, and unique wit.
The album’s title is “a biting statement that you can find unhealthy escapism in just about anything” and the track featured here is a unique one. While, admittedly, this reviewer is still fully deciphering the lyrics, it is highly appreciated that the heavy Sonic Youth-esque ditty is named after one of the best comic actors of our time – “Bill Hader”. Of course, like the song and the album, Bill Hader himself has a dark side and a ton of depth – his comic offerings are only surpassed by his strong, grounded dramatic performances.
