NYC’s Indie Folk Prodigy Amelie Lucille Brings Maturity Beyond Her Years
At 14 years old, Amelie Lucille’s music is well beyond her years on this Earth. A mature, refined, and well crafted sound, Amelie has earned comparisons to the likes of Bjork and Lana Del Ray… and rightfully so. Her self-titled 7 track EP (with six songs and an interlude track between the final two songs) blends a variety of influences and styles into something that doesn’t feel like it’s made by someone who has less than 15 years of music experience, much less total life experience.
I want to live in any time besides now. I am almost 15 and I envy anyone that was able to experience the world when it wasn’t so impersonal. The movies, the style, the people, but most of all, the music. I dream of seeing my favorite bands live – The Cure, The Police, Cocteau Twins, Fleetwood Mac, Belle and Sebastian, Björk, and The Sundays. There is so much I feel like I have missed out on. Music is what takes me there.
While Amelie isn’t sure she lives in the right time, it’s refreshing to have her around in the her and now, a breath of fresh air who is just getting started.
The EP is a must listen for fans of folk storytellers like indie great Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer, mainstream balladeers like the aforementioned Lana Del Ray, or underground darlings like Cat Power. The well crafted music creates a perfect backdrops to vivid and perfectly told stories with fantastic word pictures and heartfelt pleas.
It’s a short and easy listen, but if you really just want a track or two to get started, this newfound fan recommends starting with the opening track “Mess” or the emotive “The Call”. However, any track is a great place to start, as they all have a different feeling while still painting a cohesive picture together. The closing track, another standout entitled “Because of You” has a strong 80s vibe – think Simple Minds meets Berlin meet When in Rome – and could easily be the best place to start for others. In short, it’s all solid and the best best is listening to the whole EP and discovering it for yourself.
