NMM SoundBytes: Experience with Funktastic Smooth Indie Rock of Gideon King with “Gun to My Head”
With his upcoming album due out in September, Gideon King and his band City Blog have released a third single to whet your whistles and show you just a bit of what Gideon King & City Blog are all about. Hailing from NYC, Gideon King and his band of merry misfits soak in the sounds and sights of the big city and put their own spin to it, as they present the sordid stories of Apple to the world.
This latest single – “Gun to My Head” – opens with some flamenco jazz inspired riffing before moving into a funk laden soft rock track that will appeal to a large audience ranging from the average adult contemporary fan to the jazz club stalwarts. The instrumentation and clear love for funk and jazz fusion elevate this track from being just another soft rock song, yet there’s just such a smooth feeling presented here that it surely wouldn’t feel out of place between some James Taylor and Kenny G on your local adult contemporary/soft rock radio station.
For someone who still tends towards aggressive rock tracks or hard hitting hip hop, listening to Gideon King & City Blog is certainly a departure. However, it’s not hard to envision times in my coming weeks where this King track, among others, could find a way into several of my playlists. Trying to get some work done in the office, relaxing in the bath after a long day, just trying to clear my head on my drive home… “Gun to My Head” has a surefire niche in my musical diet.
So, even if the easy listening vibe isn’t your standard selection, give this track from Gideon King & City Blog a chance and see where you land. At the very least, the positive vibes can hopefully help kick your week off with a bit of chill in a world that seems to rarely have nearly enough.
