Now on Blu from Shudder: CREEPSHOW Season 1
It was 1982 and I was 8 years old, Do your own math. Yes, I know I’m old as hell and feel even older. My brother and I were at a Quadplex Cinema in Rockville Centre NY to see whatever big budget pop culture movie was taking the box office that weekend. I honestly don’t remember. Probably cause I’m so damn old. Anyhow, what I do remember is having about a half hour left to spare before our mom picked us up and no more quarters for the Robotron machine. What to do, what to do? My brother had an idea… “Quick, get in the door and sit in the back row.”
I sat down in the theatre seat just in time to see a lifeless body of E.G. Marshall. Then it happened. Thousands of roaches! Big and small came out of every one of Marshall’s orifices, and created a whole lot of new ones. This scene went on forever, so it seemed. And traumatized me for a long time, My brother’s constant reminders definitely didn’t help.
Of course that film was the George Romero and Stephen King classic Creepshow, a horror comedy tribute to EC comics. I eventually got past my trauma and would watch this film whenever I caught it on cable in the early 80s, which was VERY OFTEN. Followed by it’s hit & miss sequel Creepshow 2 this series does have a special place in my childlike heart. We’ll just convenient forget to mention the third film, though…
I was pleased as all get out when I heard the news of a Greg Nicotero helmed TV series adaptation. And added bonus, both Stephen King and son Joe Hill were writing episodes! This definitely sounded like a can’t miss. So a year later it premiered on the horror streaming service Shudder and it did not disappoint. The anthology series offered a pair of twisted tales every week that feature genre icons such as Adrienne Barbeau, Tobin Bell, Jeffrey Combs, and more.
The series is now available on DVD and Blu-ray through RLJE Films. Why get it if it’s already streaming everywhere? The simple answer: EXTRAS, EXTRAS, EXTRAS! We have episode commentaries, behind the scenes looks, easter eggs, and even a mini comic book included! Hell, there’s even a glow in the dark slipcover. This is a MUST HAVE for any horror collector. Do the traumatized kid in you a favor and get this collection.
