50 Songs for 50 Years: A Farsighted Hip Hop Playlist

Well hot damn! This is an impossible task… 50 songs that represent the history of hip hop, reflect my personal tastes and the tastes of our staff, include underground and indie artists (as is an important mission for this site), and doesn’t exclude important artists that we love and adore… NOPE… not possible…

Yet, here we are with a 50 song playlist that kinda sorta does that, despite many glaring omissions and attempts to holding to one track per artist. There’s really only two things for sure…

1. There are a lot of great songs across tons of subgenres on this playlist.
2. It’s not even a small sample of the hip hop we love and respect.

So with that in mind, please check it out, save it, and enjoy it… but also, join us in creating a massive hip hop playlist where we can share more of the hip hop we love with each other. You can click the link below our 50 song playlist and join our collaborative playlist that includes the first 50 songs and is already growing exponentially.

Please join us in sharing more music we love with each other in honor of the 50 year anniversary of hip hop. The link is below and we encourage you to share artists you’ve adored for years, just discovered, or even your own music.

Justin has been running websites since his first Geocities site in 1994, but only did he ever start covering anything of substance years later. After he stopped regularly running local concerts in Northern NJ and the greater Philly area, he knew he needed to step up his writing game if he expected to continue to get free music to listen to. He writes regularly here and at Cinapse, as well as contributing to a few other sites on occasion. He likes music, film, the Philadelphia Eagles, the 76ers, talking about Criminal Justice, reading Intelligence Report, and his family... not in that order. His beautiful wife is far more talented than he is and his kids far more adorable... and crazy.
