Shaking Subs and Taking Dubs: Marc-E’s “Before the Thought” is a Win

Anytime I read the name “Marc” – especially when associated with music – I think of Empire Records, where Ethan Embry’s Mark wants to start a band called “Marc”, spelling it differently so he can “always play with their minds” (as, I believe, Lucas said). But this Marc’s musical tastes seems vastly different than the metal and punk vibes Embry’s iconic Gen-X character enjoyed most. This Marc, Marc-E, makes psychedelic and spiritually inspired electronic music with an often ambient feel, thumping bass, and decidedly downtempo vibes. His latest track, “Before the Thought”, is nothing short of a downtempo banger.

Marc-E said that with his latest track he wanted to do “something that is sure to shake the subs”, but wanted to lean into the psychedelia, as well. These goals were both surely accomplished in his creation of “Before”. The track certainly thumps and it certainly trips. Dripping with trippiness, the song has a very hypnotic effect on the listener. As I personally push through the effects of a few vaccines coupled with my season allergies on this evening, some over the counter pain meds and a small edible have created the perfect setup to allow me to let Marc-E just take me away, drifting away from the aches and into a world far more enjoyable.

With his next full length slated in early 2024, “Before the Thought” excites this music nerd and writer about what is to follow. As you join me in anxiously awaiting more new music from Marc-E, be sure to follow him on Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, and Bandcamp now. As for me, I’m going to go trip out with Marc and see you all on the other side…

Justin has been running websites since his first Geocities site in 1994, but only did he ever start covering anything of substance years later. After he stopped regularly running local concerts in Northern NJ and the greater Philly area, he knew he needed to step up his writing game if he expected to continue to get free music to listen to. He writes regularly here and at Cinapse, as well as contributing to a few other sites on occasion. He likes music, film, the Philadelphia Eagles, the 76ers, talking about Criminal Justice, reading Intelligence Report, and his family... not in that order. His beautiful wife is far more talented than he is and his kids far more adorable... and crazy.
