Da’Vinci Knows That We Are All Just STARDUST
With a sound this weird, yet incredibly melodic, it comes as no surprise that Da’Vinci is from Brooklyn. The hipster Mecca churns out all types of unique and interesting music, despite its incredibly expensive housing (though, I guess, it is significantly more affordable than being in many other parts of the city) and high proclivity for neckbeards. Da’Vinci’s latest EP is a fantastic example of what a variety of widely differing and diverse influences can help create in the mind of the right person.
One could label the sound of Da’Vinci as instrumental hip-hop, but that would be an incredibly drastic oversimplification. Sure the hip-hop DNA provides the playground for which Da’Vinci plays in, but he brings so many toys to that playground that any attempt to pigeonhole his music with a genre label is futile. Take for example the scuzzed up and distorted blues guitar at the front of “Heatnup” and how it pairs with a chime-like keyboard and some well placed indecipherable vocal layers used to created melody. Or, perhaps you’re more interested in the backwards sounding vibes of “Getdown” that simultaneously get you to tap you toe and feel you mind warping. Guitars, synths, basslines, and vocal sounds fill the 4 track EP front to back, creating a unique sound that would feel at home between a Flying Lotus track and whatever weirdo hip-hop beats that folks like Busdriver or fellow Brooklynite Theophilus London are rapping over these days.
With only 4 tracks, it’s impossible to peg one standout track – though that scuzzy guitar on “Heatnup” really does it for me. All 4 tracks really have a unique flavor and showcase what this young, interesting mad beat scientist has in store for the world. I, for one, can’t wait to hear more.
