Seattle Based Classical Pianist Veers Into New Electronic Territory

While it’s good to have an “open mind”, much like the song we’re about to discuss below, it’s hard not to go into life’s many situations without, at least, some suppositions. That can most certainly also be the case with art, such as film and music. While I try to approach new movies and albums with no assumptions, it’s not always easy. For example, when I read that a classically trained pianist and composer is entering the world of electronic music, I’m expecting some atmospheric filmic score… even if I’m trying not to assume such things. In the case of artists like Seattle’s Pol Sembrano, I have to admit that my presumptions can be quite off-base. With a sound far more akin to Erasure, Tears for Fears, or Robbie Williams than the typical sound of an artist that began with the title “composer”, Sembrano’s uplifting new musical sound and direction is encapsulated with his single “Open Mind”.

One of four tracks on Pol’s debut EP – Anywhere – “Open Mind” is meant as a teaser into the self-titled project that Sembrano plans to release later this year. With a definite New Wave/Dance Pop influence, Sembrano also stays true to his roots in his showcasing of intricate musicianship – all composed, performed, and produced by himself. The Fillipino-American musical savant is more than open to collaboration, but wanted to kick down the door with a debut that showcases his many talents. If this 4-song EP is any indication, that debut album is sure to show us all exactly what Sembrano can do.
