FAFF 2020: The Extremely Fun SPARE PARTS is The Farsighted’s Best of the Fest
Between myself and my illustrious colleague Jon, the better part of the Frightening Ass Film Fest was consumed and experienced. Of the numerous films we each watched, it was Andrew Thomas Hunt’s sophomore effort that was easily this year’s Best of the Fest. While its inclusion firmly in the horror genre may be debatable to some, the film’s excessive violence and gore soaked genre goodness is sure to please the most persistent horror hounds among us.
The film opens with a kickass chick punk band called Ms. 45 and a barroom melee. The tone is set for the film by this fantastic opening scene, letting us know that we are in store for some big excitement and carnage.
A group of girls get lost on a random dirt road. The tow truck driver tows them to his junkyard. Everything seems normal until they wake up with weapons for limbs, and thrown into the fight of their lives.
As noted above, the band of badass ladies gets stuck on the side of the road and they get a tow to a local junkyard. Little do they know that their future is a post-apocalyptic life and death game of gladiator and new version of the Max Max style Thunderdome.
Longtime genre stalwart Julian Richings (Man of Steel, Urban Legend, Channel Zero, Orphan Black) is the emperor of this junkyard wasteland. A host of fighters, trainers, and various other members of this society make themselves known, while the band of 4 that we start with is forced to fight for their lives with nothing other than their weapon limbs and their own cunning. Of course, interpersonal issues with the girls and their new friends and foes create interesting moments throughout, but it’s the action that really drives this film.
With a blend of body horror, action insanity, and buckets of blood, Spare Parts is immediately jumping to one of my most anticipated releases in the coming months. Fan of the Mad Max films, Sushi Typhoon releases, and Turbo Kidd need to pay special attention to updates about this one’s release. The performances are killer, with Michelle Argyris, Emily Alatalo, and Ryan Allen as the real standouts.
Bloody and visceral fun, this is seriously a can’t-miss genre blast.
